Web Page Design This material was part of a presentation in the Spring of 1997. What is a Web Page? An Internet map, a link to resources, or an advertisement http://www.baking.m-ms.com/? Nothing
but an address, a URL, a pointer to an Internet resource. The location of a file on a
computer that just happens to be available to you. And this one is about M & M's! Before you send that email message, read this style guide. Check the Beginner's Guide
to Effective Email at http://www.webfoot.com/advice/email.top.html.
Who has a Web Page: Businesses, Non-Profits, Schools, Organizations,
Individuals Alta Vista also includes a full-text index of newsgroups updated in real-time. http://www.altavista.digital.com http://www.slip.net/~scmetro/home.htm
Entertainment Network News can illustrate information available from a not-for-profit
company. Schools, colleges, and universities provide a wealth of information. Check this URL. http://www.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/bartlett/ for Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Do you remember Jonathan Swift's "The sight of you is good for sore eyes" from Polite Conversation. Dialogue I? Head to http://www.pbs.org/ to find PBS
Online. After years of going home with the armadillo, Austin City Limits can go home with
you. Find all there program links. http://www.winternet.com/~julie/ntn.html
Here is a personal home that is unusual. We don't know who Julie is, but she puts together
a great list of freebies and low-cost items! The deals change every week. What will it do for me? 1. Make money, friends, enemies! If you have something to sell, a web page may help. Visit http://futfan.com/home.html for an example
of a company whose sales increased 30% because of an Internet website. See if you can find
the map to their store. 2. Organize those things I like Are your Netscape bookmarks a mess? Is it time to straighten out all the web addresses
you have collected? Use this month to clean up your act. Begin a personal webpage. 3. Be a learning experience A basic goal for everyone is the learn one new thing each day. Ask me why I try to
learn 2 things! The process of creating a web page will provide some real stimulation for
your brain. And fun too! The folks at PBS have created an extensive set of files related
to the Internet. For a full dose of "Creating Your Own Homepage", visit http://www.pbs.org/uti/guide/html.html Where will it be stored? 1. Use a server from an ISP Intelliworks, Inc. and NetWorld Online are two Fremont area ISP's that offer
inexpensive webpage hosting options. Call Intelliworks at 419-334-9801 [http://www.intelliworks.net] or NetWorld at
419-334-9042 [http://www.nwonline.net]. Check the WWW
for other options, you might find one for FREE! 2. Keep it on you own computer Your web page can be created, stored and accessed from your computer. Access it by
using your web browser program. But remember, only you will see it. It will NOT be
accessible by anyone else on the Internet. What goes into it? 1. Text You can voice your opinion, include poetry, advertise your wares, just about anything
as long as it is legal. The same laws apply to the web as apply in non-electronic life.
You can organize lists, add emphasis to words, or manipulate the size and color of the
text. 2. Tags HTML is based around the concept of "tags". A tag looks like this: <B>.
Most HTML functions have an opening and closing tag - the tag applies to all text in
between. For example, <B> is the tag for "bold". Any text between a
<B> and a </B> will be displayed in bold type when the document is viewed by
the appropriate browser. So <B>hello world</B> would be displayed as hello
world. Check these online HTML references. http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/Tools/
for the whole picture OR http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/General/Internet/WWW/HTMLPrimer.html
for the Beginner's Guide. 3. Graphics Can I include my dog's picture? Yes, and your high school reunion photos, and
personally designed material. Include anything that can be scanned, created or downloaded.
Remember copyright laws. Start at http://www.vol.it/mirror/Graphics/list1.html 4. Links This is probably the most interesting thing about the Internet. Links such as Gail Metz
in Cleveland at http://www.iage.com/bookmark.html
provide special on-ramps to the Internet. Your web page can be the same for you. Some time to learn HTML 1. Introduction to HTML HyperText Markup Language is a way of adding various attributes to plain text files
which are published on the World Wide Web. HTML lets you mix graphics with text, change
the appearance of text, and create hypertext documents which interact with the user. 2. Web authoring tools HTML Writer - http://www.public.asu.edu/~bottger/
Simple, small, runs under both 3.x and W95. HotDog - http://www.sausage.com - The PRO
version 3.0 has just been released. And they also have a DUMMIES version named DUMMY.
Download this W95 web authoring tool today. FrontPage - http://microsoft.com/products/prodref/62_ov.htm
- Microsoft's entry for W95 users. Netscape - http://home.netscape.com/comprod/mirror/client_download.html
Netscape Communicator and Netscape Gold 3.x both include an HTML editor. 3. BUT http://www.wizard.com/~fifi/pagemake.html will do it for you. |
